Over 520 Cities Declare Extra Mile Day and Raise Up Volunteer Heroes
Mayors Across America Come Together to Celebrate Volunteerism

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Over 520 cities are recognizing the “extra mile” efforts of volunteers and organizations in their local communities and have declared November 1st as Extra Mile Day.

In connection with Extra Mile America, mayors in all 50 states have embraced the “Extra Mile Day” movement. At a time when requests for local services exceeds budgets, Extra Mile Day celebrates the unselfish individuals and organizations that are stepping forward, serving and meeting local needs. The vision of motivational author Shawn Anderson, “Extra Mile Day” was created in 2009 with 23 inaugural cities; its outreach continues to grow.

“Extra Mile Day is an awesome reminder that each of us has the power to create positive and difference-making change,” shares Anderson. “It could be volunteering at the local animal shelter, mowing your tired neighbor’s lawn, or simply telling the grocery clerk ‘thank you for your smile.’ Going the extra mile can happen in a thousand different ways, and it’s in doing that bit more where the world gets a bit kinder.”

First spreading the “go the extra mile” message across the U.S. in 2009, Anderson used a symbolic 4,000-mile ocean-to-ocean bike ride. On the solo ride, the non-bicyclist interviewed over 200 people who had been identified as going the extra mile in overcoming setback or who had risked everything to accomplish something extraordinary. After the 90-day tour, Anderson personally gave away $10,000 to those people whose stories he found especially inspiring. It was from there that Extra Mile Day was created and now grows.

Anderson concludes, “It’s great to celebrate volunteerism on November 1, but Extra Mile Day is more than one day a year to recognize ‘go the extra mile’ heroes. Extra Mile Day is a reminder that every day we have the opportunity to make a difference in hundreds of ways when we choose to do more than what is expected, and instead, ‘go the extra mile.'”
